1st BAT - A MOMENT OF SILENCE

Image taken from Visit London.

Some people say that a moment of silence is when you are walking in the country and the only thingyou can hear is your own footsteps crack on the autumn leaves, the wind blow, a nearby river rush, and the birds sing.

For me, a moment of silence takes place just ten seconds before the train arrives into the underground station: all conversations, readings, and thoughts stop and all the eyes concentrate on the tunnel's black mouth until the train appears with a thundering noise.

Now, tell me: What is your moment of silence? What describes it?

Please, post your comments before Nov 10th.

  1. For me, a moment of silence is when I am writing something that I feel so much or when I'm thinking about what I can write. This moments are special for me, because is when I have inspiration and it's only between the paper and me, we are alone. My mind opens and I foget about everything. I think about all, things that have happened and things that could happen. I can think about movies or in my life.

A moment of silence could also be when I am walking on the street with music and I understand the letter of the song. It feels so emotional.

    1. Hm, Núria, I see you have nice moments of silence. When you say that you can "understand the letter of a song" what you really mean is that you understand the WORDS or the LYRICS.
Anyway, you wrote a nice coment.

For me my moment of silence is when i finish one of my books, a really nice book that you just can't put down because of it's beauty and words, and you realize how empty you feel when you reach the end. In my opion, the greatest books are the ones that make you feel this emptiness. In that moment of silence you reallize the magnificence of the book.

  9. For me one of my favourite silent moments is when I'm drawing. Try to put in the paper all my thoughts and all the things that I can imagine. That is a great moment because through a simple draw I can express all my feelings with no words. That draw brings me another moment of silence when I see it and I have the opportunity to remember who I'm.

  10. My moment of silence is any moment that i can put my headphones on and shut up the entire world with a click. I concentrate in one of the most important things of my life, music, i stop thinking, and an infinite world of possibilities and dreams is opened in my mind. Any other moment of my life is just too noisy for me, unless i am reading a good book, of course.

A few years ago I did a swimming course, and I use this relax time to think a lot. In the swimming pool I can concentrate better than in my house. But now I go on summer, and I prefer only to relax and let my mind go blank.

I look at the picture in silence, I look for mistakes or I just only think that I'm proud of what I've done. My second moment of silence is when I finish a chapter of a book. But what I really like isn't only gazing it, is thinking how really it's what I'm watching. In this moment also I think silently and alone, only concentrate in what exist besides the I can see.
This summer I also discovered another beautiful moment of silence but exciting. It's about swimming in the sea on the night. The only thing that you see is the foam of the waves like white stains in the dark while you only are hearing the sound of the waves.

To me, the moment of silence that I enjoy the most it’s the last day of the year: New Year’s Eve, especially those 12 seconds. 12 seconds where everyone around you is silent while they eat the grapes and hear the bells ring, just like you. But it’s just that moment, when there is only one second left, where everyone looks each other in completely silence waiting to get up of the sofa and congratulate each other of that new year that has started.

  51. What’s my favourite moment of silence? This question falls outside my area of expertise. First of all, I think it’s worth mentioning that we call silence what’s not. Any concert, the library, the most intrincate exam and even a longed-for piece of pie include sound or noises -maybe people talking, hands crumpling paper or someone writing on the computer-, and that reaches headlong the line of things that are not silence. That’s why we need to trawl very deep to avoid wild-goose chases.

It’s obvious that there are constant expressions of authentic silence, like the soundless moment when we are completely alone in our homes, laying in bed and just dealing with ourselves and our free will, but I sincerely prefer to move around my house and do some stuff that just keeping being lazy, but, in short term, that’s the only moment of real silence that come to my judgment.

When I’m playing a match, sometimes the referee whistles a foul in my favor, and it means I must shoot two free throws, so when I’m ready to shoot, all the noise, people cheering up, trainers giving indications, players screaming… disappears, so I have a couple of seconds of “relaxing”, this helps a lot so you can throw correctly. When everything seems to be senseless and I don't know how to get out of a loop (fact that happens to me more usually than I'd like), few people know where I'll be; because I'll be by my own, surrounded by noise and riot, but paradoxically, in a very quiet place for my mind. I'll be out of my day-to-day life, enjoying myself and thinking about everything I need to put in order.

The first one is when the referee throws up the ball and 2 players jump to take the ball, for me this is a moment of silence until a player catches the ball. The second moment is when i ride a motorbike because i see all that is around of me and this disconnects me and creates a moment of silence. The last one is when you know that a scare is going to happend in a movie and you wait for it.
