2nd BATXILLERAT - Are you bilingual?

Read this article about bilingualism written by Jessica Marshall. Then you can drop a comment considering the following questions:

Can the things the author says apply to our country?
Are you an example of any of the cases discussed in the article?
Are you bilingual or monolingual? Do you feel you have an advantage over the counterpart?

Remember that you don't have to answer the questions one by one. In fact, they are a guideline for your comment.

  1. As far as I know in Catalonia there are two languages, Catalan and Spanish. Lot of people also speaks like three, four, five and even six languages or more.
I, for example, speak Catalan, Spanish, English( considering I passed B2 level), and I am learning German so in one year I will be speaking it easily.
Why easily? Because my experience showed me that as more languages I learn as easy as it is to learn another one. This is why I choose German and not French, the las one will be very easy for me after learning German and because of its similarity with Catalan/Spanish.
Taking a look round up the world, we can notice that the countries where people speaks more languages such as Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Sweden...etc ( I mean they speak very different languages) Are the ones where the school education, executive or whatever it is called works out better.
So this may be an andvantage, but should we have a common language round the world? Would it make the planet efficency better? It is may be the decision of develop the society or otherwise each person in whether.
I do not know, asks yourselves.

  2. I agree with Carles opinion. Countries that speak more than one or two languages are better in work and other aspects.
I consider that I'm bilingual because I can speak Spanish, Catalan, a little bit of French and English more or less. But I think that we must learn other languages since we are child because it can help us in our future.
In my village there's a lot of people who comes from other countries and they can speak two or three languages. For example I know a boy called Sami, he was born in Spain but his father is from Germany and his mother is from Turkey so he speaks Spanish, Turkish and German. This type of people will have more advantages than me because they can speak languages very well and it's a good quality when you travel or when you are searching work..
Finally I totally agree with Carles's idea, he said that if we have a language in common world will be better and more efficient.

  3. Since we were young, teachers repeated us that know two or more languages are better than know only one, because is evident that persons who can speak two languages at the same time are more efficient when they want to express.
Besides, I think there's nothing better like be bilingual; you can express in one language or in another, without making any effort in a particular situation (e.g., when you travel to another country).
Also I think it would be easier if everyone spoke the same language, but then nobody would do any effort to learn and our brain wouldn’t develop, and consequently, all types of degenerative brain disease like Alzheimer would act much faster than if we knew more of them.
To finish, all people know that now in Catalonia we have one problem connected with this article, and I want to say that I’m not agree with the new law. Is a controversial but, if we don’t speak Catalan in Catalonia and we only speak Spanish… Catalan will disappear in a few centuries.

  4. I’m totally agree with Nerea about the problem in Catalonia, but not only in Catalonia, in other countries too. In this world always we have a problem with the languages, for example the people who talk English since they was born, many of they, only speak English because they speak the official language…And we must learn other languages.
I’m bilingual, I speak Spanish, Catalan and more or less French and English and I want to learn German or other language, because for find work is easier than if I know one language and for travel too. And I’m sure that one person who knows two languages have more facility that learn other language because, since children, control two languages and is more deft.

  5. One thing that Carles has said has made me remember a thing that I heared: for the persons who speak two lenguages is more easy learn a third lenguage.
I think that it's good study and contol more than two lenguages because speak more lenguages give you more options, for example to go to another country and have a good job.
I'm agree whith Nerea that is more easier to have one unic lenguage but it could be mor a problem than a solution because of Alzeimer and other diseases of the brain, but at the same time it could be good for develop the study of the mind.
Probably in a future i will start study another lenguage like german, Angela Merkel want engineers.

  6. I found this article interesting, we all know that bilingualism is good because you can speak more than one language, essential thing today to find work and to develop yourself in this world, but what I found most curious was that also helps to delay Alzheimer's, and would be one more reason why it would be good for that from small, we learned more than one language at a time, apart from that we learn Catalan because we live in Catalonia, and English, now in this language day without going anywhere.

I totally agree with Carles, today, the more you learn, the better you can live tomorrow, so who can, to learn four, five, or languages as possible.

  7. They say, that if children are taught two languages from an early, to the point of being well balanced, these bilingual children have an advantage over monolingual children to learn another language for example.

Some advantages of being bilingual, are for example when communicating with people of different nationalities. The work is also very important because today the more languages you know, have advantages over others who only know one.

  8. Remember that there was another question in the post. Is an advantage to be bilingual? You live in a bilingual society (that's what they say). Do you feel you are in advantage in front of monolingual people?

  9. I think that be bilingual or multilingual person, are better because as more languages you can speak and understand, is more better for you because you can grow as person and in the society.

  10. I've founded this article very interesting, I really liked. Our country (Spain) is a good example of bilingual country; we've got catalan, castilian, basque, galician... It's unusual to found so many languages in one single country. So, we can say we live in a multilingual (not bilingual) contry. However, if we consider the autonomous region such as Catalonia or Galicia, most of them are bilingual, in conclusion: a multilingual country with bilingual communities. In my case, I live in Catalonia, so I speak castilian (spanish) and catalan, and I learn english at school (my third language), so I can say I'm bilingual, because I use two languages as languages of my country while I'm studying a foreign language (english). Actually we've got scientific studies that show us that being bilingual increases some cognitive capabilities, like executive functioning and improves the quality of life of alzheimer's patients. In reference to what Carles said about having an universal language, I think it would be perfect, I'd love to see it happen (in a not so fare past, some people tried to create Esperanto language, a project of an universal language, but they failed), and I think trying to keep all the languages that exist now, is absurd: the "homeland", the "national identity", the "language as a national symbol that must be preserved..." all of this concepts are just empty and inexistent concepts that they are used by the political class to manipulate people at the greatest way to benefit themselves. The language is just a way to comunicate with others, we don't need more of one language. I can't stand how, for example, catalan politicians waste public money in building embassies around the world to "internationalize the catalan identity" and, at the same time, they are closing hospitals... I can't understand it. The citicens are will be equal with or without their "national, ancient and very important culture and identity". This things don't feed people and don't cure diseases: we should be more pragmatic. In summary: at the moment we live in a world with hundreds of languages, and we have to adaptate ourselves at this situation, so we have to learn an important language like english because the unstoppable globalization requires that. so, obviously, the more languages you know, the better you'll be in the labor market.

  11. It seems that we all agree with the benefits of speaking two or more languages. Scientists says that we only use the 10% of the capacity of our mind so it should not be a problem learn more of one language. We use to say “Knowledge does not take place” and if it appears that delays the onset of Alzheimer, much better.
I’m agree with Nerea that we should preserve Catalan, it’s a benefit for our mind and for the language.

  12. At first, it’s true that born or live in a country who speaks several languages can help us to make an active brain and it’s easy for us learn more languages. And we have the advantage that our country has a rich country with some idioms but I think that nobody thinks that we have another advantage. All the people says that English it’s the international business English, and they tell the truth but with our Spanish we can arrive to the south American’s costumer in a better way than others.
Secondly, I’m totally agree with the study in the part when says that bilingual people have less vocabulary in one language and spend more time searching the correct word, but in all, they have more vocabulary and can arrive to more people than monolingual. I can say this because I’m bilingual, I speak Spanish and Catalan, and I am learning to improve my English.
To close this comment, only say that speak different languages can open a lot of doors in a future.

  13. Bilingualism is good. Is better speak two languages than only one, and is also better speak three languages than two… But I think that sometimes a language becomes the dominant language than the other. In Catalonia, for instance, Spanish is the dominant language (there are more newspapers, more tv channels, more radios…) and maybe in the future Catalan can disappear. If that happens all the positive things of bilingualism will end. I think that is very important to preserve all the languages that we have.

  14. I think the bilingualism is good. Because speaking two lenguages is better than speaking only one. In conclusion speaking two languages allows you to communicate with more people than just only speaking one lenguage

  15. I think that the bilingualism is good and necessary.
Speaking and understand two languages is good and better than speaking only one. In actually, they are have missing many languages and is not good.
Speaking more than one language, or even three gives you more opportunities to interact with people from other countries.

  16. In my opinion being bilingual is an advantage specifically when we talk about work , and aspirations that everyone have in the future, you don’t have to think so much to know that a person who knows more than a language will go before than another that only knows one if they aspire to the same job, and those are the harsh facts. If it is also good for not developing Alzheimer, to do better tests or to the development of our brain , that’s perfect, but what we need is to learn languages and everything we can for having a future in these difficult crisis times that we are living nowadays, because if we don’t focus in our studies probably we will live at parent’s homes since we will be 40.

  17. I have found this article so interesting because being bilingual is very important. Can thing, speak, write two or more languages is better than only one.
Luckily, we who lives in Catalonia are bilingual, but it is not enough because the English is very important in nowdays.
So I thing that we must to know three or four languages (Catalan, Spanish, English and French, for instance).

  18. I'm totally agree with my partners about being bilingual is very important to our society because this way you can express yourself better than if you only know one language. Our country is a good example of bilingual because there are a lot of different languages like Catalan, Basque, Spanish, etc. As you can read in this article which I find very interesting, is that the people who use more than one language can develop their brains. I think that the people must learn like three languages because you can avoid mental disease like Alzheimer and if you travel somewhere you can communicate with people. But this needs to do an effort to learn and there are a lot of people who don't want to.
As we live in Catalonia, we are a good example because the people who lives here speak Catalan and Spanish, but I thick it is not enough because the English is very important right now.

  19. Wow!, This is a very interesting topic because we are in a country, as Jesus said, multilingual and it means that we know some of the effects produced by the bilingualism or similar.

Well, starting my opinion, I want to say that the good effects of bilingualism in human brain should be already a fact. Like each other discipline, the language raise up our perception and increase mind's agility too. For this reason and also for the better comunication with other society, all people should study one or more foreign languages.

  20. The things the autor says can apply to my country because here, in Catalonia, we speak two languages at least, the catalan and the spanish. I'm not bilingual only because I speak four languages: Catalan, spanish, english and french.
I think that bilinguism is good and we have an advantadge respect the people who only speaks one language, like the spanish or the french because we can speak one language more and we'll find it easy to speak more languages.

  21. I agree with Carles opinion.
Countries that speak more than one or two languages are better in work and other aspects as communication with others.
Also when you travel is better to speak more languages.
And also, I agree with Pau opinion because In Cataluña the dominant language is Spanish.
Many languages have disappeared, and we must keep them.

  22. I think that learn more lenguages can affect the brain because the people who learn more than one lenguages have the brain most prepared to change the code of the communication. But I think in fact this are a little advantatge of be bilingual or multilingual, the really advantatge is that you can communicate with the people who don't live in your country and is foreign.

  23. I think that the bilingualism or multilingualism is necessary in our society. Not only is it better to think more quickly, but we also need it because in the years in which we live, we must know how to speak others languages if we go on holidays to a place where they do not speak our language or for you contract as a person that know to speak more some languages and has study, that other person who speak only a language.

  24. I think that this article about biligualism is very interesant. Since we was children, we learned two languages, spanish and catalan, and I think that is very important knows diferents languages, because now, for to find work, is very necesary. And I very impress with this concept helps to delay Alzheimer in the people! This is a reason among others for the people learn the languages since they are children.

  25. I agree with all comments, I think that we are very lucky to live in a bilingual country, at time to learn more languages we have advantages, and we benefit greatly, as you said the commentary, to overcome diseases such as the Alzheimer.
I consider myself bilingual because I can speak Catalan and Spanish, so we have to preserve the Catalan because knowing two languages can give to us more opportunities in the future and I think that people who can speak two languages like Catalan and Spanish can learn more languages because is easily for them.
I have friends that are going to study in English speaking countries to benefit themselves at time to speak and for have a best work in the future. Personally, I think that we could stop this problem teaching English to children since they’re three years old.

  26. What we understand as bilingualism is the fact of knowing two different languages and to handle them enough to be able to use them both in every situation that requires it.
Even though this linguistic condition is respected in most of the times, there are different points of view; towards and against the bilingualism.

In one side, and in the most common, we have the position towards the bilingualism. In this side we find the people who agrees with the fact of being bilingual. People who thinks that is a good idea to know two or more languages, because it can be helpful for a different sort of things like being open minded, to be able to communicate with people from other countries, to advance in new techniques to help people with some illnesses like Alzheimer or simply to make your culture rich.

In the other side, we have who let the bilingualism down saying that they don't want any other language because theirs it's the best, and if they have to communicate with any foreigner, he is the one who has to know the country's language.
They don't want to realize that they are holding their country back. That side could match with the nationalism thoughts or simply the ignorants; that think that the few they know it's enough and useful anyhow.

If I had to give my opinion It would match with the first paragraph's. I consider that being bilingual is not enough. I think that handling two or more languages is something useful in a great sort of things that I mentioned in the second paragraph, and moreover, in my point of view, someone who's able to handle two or more languages is always advanced in front of those who only know one ore two.
All in all, nowadays learning a new language it's something easy and amusing if you go in for it, and at the same time it's going to be one of the most important tools in the future that the crisis will leave.

  27. I think that this article about bilingualism is very interesting. In my country there are two languages and two are learned from childhood as something completely normal. I think this is an advantage for me because there are scientific evidences that the bilinguism help us to learn and improve the mental agility.
But I think in fact this are a little advantage of be bilingual or multilingual, the really advantage is that you can communicate with the people who don't live in your country and is foreign.
In conclusion, bilingualism and learn many languages is necessary for your life, it improves your intellect and increase your job opportunities.
